This year it was decided that Cartmel should contribute a team to the prestigious Relay for Life event, organised by Cancer Research UK. The idea is that team members should take it in turns to walk the perimeter of the rugby pitch to create a constant flow of walkers for 24 hours, raising money for Cancer Research through individual sponsorship. The walking was surprisingly tiring, and although some people marched on through the night, Stephen and I were forced to retire to our beds for a short time. Although you might think this sounds a bit wimpy, we had in fact just taken part in an epic three-legged race which left us entirely knackered (although we did win!). We also got a glorious win in the hula-hoop race with Kat showing amazing agility and skill as she traversed the course well ahead of the competitors. On a sour note, however, Phil and Sam were unable to win the wheelbarrow race, although I think they may have gotten out of the experience a little closer than they had been.
The highlight of the night was a candle-lit vigil at midnight, with members of all the teams taking a silent lap in the presence of candles commemorating those who had engaged in the fight against cancer. It was a truly touching moment, which left many taking part in tears.
By the morning, however, spirits were definitely flagging. Many of our team had been up all night (although Rachael bucked the trend by sleeping through the ENTIRE event in our camp in the middle of the field). However, a last minute reprieve kept us going, in the form of a bad-ass water fight which left us all soaked to the skin. Fortunately, it was a rare day for Lancaster and the sun was shining, and spirits were high as we stormed into the finish at noon.
I’m far too lazy to look up the final total raised by all the teams, but I can assure you that it was lots. Hopefully the relay will take place again next year, and I hope I will see you all there!

Carter Shield
This last term has seen the Carter shield move outside to take advantage of the supposed fine weather. We’ve had a lot of fun in the sun competing with the other colleges, probably getting too much for our own good!
Touch Rugby
The first event of the term was touch rugby. As per usual legions of loyal Cartmelians turned out to face the mighty forces of the other colleges. In our group we played Furness, Bowland and Grizedale, drawing the first and losing the second two respectively. Although it doesn’t sound very impressive the odds we were facing were almost impossible, especially when you’re facing an under-21 England International Rugby player (Bowland)! Special mention goes to Little Emma and Nick Padley for scoring some spectacular tries.

Ultimate Frisbee
The next titanic tournament was Ultimate Frisbee, which has to be one of the most entertaining games I have ever played. Our group draw was against Furness, Fylde and Lonsdale. We absolutely thrashed Furness but alas Fylde and Lonsdale’s teams were superior due to a number of University players. Not to toot my own horn but I did completely humiliate one of the Univer-sity Ultimate Frisbee team by passing the Frisbee between his legs to another team mate. Special thanks to Phil Miles for being a damn good captain.
Rounders
The final event of the summer was Rounders which was absolutely brilliant. We were drawn in the same group as Bowland, Fylde and Lonsdale and with our first game quickly lost against Fylde it looked like the afternoon was going to go the same way as the last two events. However, in the next game we completely annihilated Bowland! Phil Miles and Nick Padley up made a brilliant first base/backstop combinations, while Stephen Ashby fielded out deep very effectively. David Wood-cock was unstoppably when it came to batting, hitting rounder after rounder. We went onto destroy Lonsdale making it to the semi-finals to play Grizedale, whom we also thrashed. A mention to Robbie Pickles who hit more rounders in a single afternoon than in his entire life up to that point. Surprise, surprise though, we were up against Fylde in the final but despite a monumental battle we lost- damn close though!
A massive thanks to everyone who played in the Carter Shield this term. Cartmel is not known as a sporting college, but I have a firm belief we can destroy the opposition when we want to. So next year join the fight back!
Inter-block Rounders
This turned out to be a massive success after we spent the entire day worring about whether it was going to chuck it down. Thankfully the weather forecast was very wrong and we had brilliant sunshine. Five teams came down, which was more than 70 people! After an afternoon of serious battling between the teams and some questionable umpire decisions (sorry!) we had our winner: ‘We are better than Kat’- with ‘If Carlsberg made rounders teams…’ coming second. After a knackering afternoon we all came back for pizza and drinks in the bar. A massive thanks to everyone who attended, we hope you had fun!
Next year were are intending to run a five-aside football competition with the college, with the possibility of a County/Cartmel Cup, so keep your eyes peeled. Also if you have any ideas or any competition you would like to see us run, just get in contact.

Creative’s latest offering, the Creative Zen, pits itself against the iPod Nano and basically wins. It comes in a range of sizes from 2 to 32GB and has additional features such as an FM radio, voice and music recording and comprehensive video playback. It also comes with an immense 16.7 millions colour screen and a 2.5 inch screen. And the best part- the price! The 16GB model is a mere £99, the same as the 4GB iPod Nano, You do the math(s). Only disadvantage is that it won’t play music you bought off iTunes - you will need an iPod for that. But if you haven’t been tied down by this, the ZEN is definitely the player for you.

Lyndsey
I don’t know about you, but the prospect of a film containing our four favourite label-loving Manhattan girls got me very excited. Unfortunately, rather than heading down to the premiere in a New York taxi, cosmopolitan in hand, we found ourselves running for the bus and popping into Humbugs for a pick-n-mix before the film. Fortunately, Michael King’s film allowed us to sit back and imagine we were living the high life in Manhattan. Professional reviewers seem to agree that the story and characters were best left at the end of the sixth series, but I think the films was filled with all the right qualities. There are some hilariously classic moments, including Samantha’s Valentines evening laying naked and covered head to toe in homemade sushi, which had the audience in hysterics. The good news is that the characters are all just as self consumed and fashion-conscious as ever, and are still as fun and fabulous as they were in the television series.
Helen
As someone who was introduced to our favourite foursome earlier this year, watched all 6 series in a month, and fell in love with them straight away, I was dying to see this movie. When the music began I was instantly confused and a little disappointed by the new, ‘jazzed up’, film-version of the theme tune. However, that was the only thing that did disappoint me, as the film takes you on an emotional roller coaster - from laughing, to crying, to at one point being very scared of Charlotte’s actions. On more than one occasion I thought I might need a tissue, and the people behind us certainly did as they sobbed their hearts out. With the highs, the lows, the sex, and the every day things (not that sex isn’t an ‘every day thing’) this movie is everything I wanted it to be. It had some perfect moments that left me wanting to be Carrie Bradshaw and, just to add an extra note for the guys who are secretly reading this, the perfect way to propose is with a shoe!

This issue’s a big one. With all the big films for the summer starting to come out now, Robbie turns his attention to Indiana Jones, and steps aside for the ladies to review Sex and the City. Not only that, Robbie continues his Apple hatred when he reviews the (actually very impressive) new Creative Zen

Indiana Jones
And the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
The Indiana Jones Trilogy becomes very inaptly named with the release of this fourth film to the cinema, which sees Harrison ford reprise his role as the adventurous archaeologist. The only difference is: he’s twenty years older, although we don’t think this makes him any less awesome. Like a fine wine, Ford has matured with age, and this film packs in the geriatric action – geriaction if you will (on the subjects of Jerrys, hard-core fans may be disappointed with the lack of Nazis in this film. But don’t worry, we get communist hatred rammed down our throats instead).
This latest film is packed full of all-American, all-cheesy escapades, including a fist fight between jocks and rockers, a student protest against the communist threat and I think almost every single scene has an American flag flying in the background somewhere. Despite this Indiana Jones does come off as a passably good film, with some good jokes, and exhilarating action sequences featuring all manner of creepy crawlies and, of course, a snake.
All this despite the presence of my personal nemesis, Shia Leboeuf (I haven’t met him, I just know I don’t want to). Appearing in films such as Transformers, and previously appearing in the TV series Even Stevens, this guy has plagued us for years with his terrible acting and lack of personality which leaves him entirely unlikeable – and in this film, he lives up exactly to those expectations. Don’t expect any warm, fuzzy moments with this guy on screen, who I promise you fails to deliver in bags. (Note from Editor — Bear in mind that Robbie is completely obsessed with hating this guy, mainly because his girlfriend loves him, and I thought he was quite good. He certainly didn’t ruin the film as much as Robbie makes out.)
Anyway, I would certainly recommend this film for a casual watch and a reminisce about previous films, but do not expect to see the best film ever made or you may be disappointed. I have deliberately not mentioned the ending as I don’t want to ruin it, but trust me, it may completely change your view on the film. Whether for good or bad, I will leave up to you (as I’ve run out of space).

By now all of you should know what I’m talking about - the massive pyrotechnic display that was the premature demolition of everyone’s favourite waste disposal area. Fast becoming a Facebook phenomenon (‘I Survived the Cartmel Fire’), many of you were woken up by this ‘exciting’ one-off event. Despite the fact that almost all of the onlookers were gathered outside my window, I unfortunately did not wake up to see the spectacle.
UPP (the lovely people who take our deposits every year) aren’t rebuilding it any time soon, but we’ve had some suggestions for what might appear in its place: the South West campus stop for our new metro system (see SCAN), a strip club, a new Big Brother house, an airport terminal, a Chinese restaurant, a labour camp, a Dominos pizza-waiting area or a new bar for Grizedale (that’s right, I went there). Unfortunately, I suspect that it will one day be returned to being ‘just’ a bin store, but in the mean time feel free to dream. I know I will.

In week two this term the evolution of mankind was thrown back a generation or two when our beautiful Cartmelians decided to ruin their good image and step out in prehistoric style! With dirty hair, muddy faces and poorly cut loincloth, the Carleton had never before seen such a strange sight (OK, so that’s a lie, the Carleton has seen far worse, but I’m just being dramatic).
As always at the Carleton it was a messy night, with one of our party getting punched in face, and our President kissing everyone he saw (which some may have enjoyed more than others… I know I did!). Award for best costume probably goes to those who arrived in cow-print for some reason - not quite sure if they got a bit confused about the theme! Anyway, the moral of the story is we all made it back safely and learnt a valuable lesson about the Carleton- it’s fun (but I think you all knew that already)!

Although I’m sure you’re getting bored of these write-ups by now, Fury continues to be so awesome and regularly popular that we can’t just ignore it! So, to this weeks Fury, the last of this academic year…
This time, as I’m sure you are all aware, the collect-ables were coloured key-rings from each college. We were back up to eight bars again, thanks to a hasty re-opening of Fylde for the event, and it’s modern décor seemed to be a hit, making it one of the busiest bars early on in the night. Although it was described by some as having something of a ‘departure lounge’ feel to it, the bar appears unfinished and so there are still high hopes for the start of next year.
Cartmel was also extremely busy all night, with the Ghostbusters dropping in for a tipple early on, a nutter in a monkey suit joining in later, and some great music that had people actually dancing! in the middle of the floor. The atmosphere was awesome and it was really great to see that our bar was definitely as busy as Fylde, and getting close to County in terms of popularity.
Of course the bus from South Avenue was completely packed at quarter to twelve, meaning that some were forced to wait while the next bus arrived. The tra-ditional ‘back seat of the bus’ song was initiated, with the unlucky people at the bot-tom staggering away after the 30th person leaped on top of the pile. And then, we arrived at a packed Sugarhouse.
It was busier than I have ever seen it (and I know we say that every time but we really mean it this time). We danced the night away to some cheesy classics in the back room before the traditional trip to Pizzeta before bed. A great way to end the year, and next year looks good for Fury - keep an ear open for details in Fresher’s Week.

In week 8 the Sugarhouse turned on the UV lights and got out their glow sticks for ‘glo night’. They opened up the back room, charged 90p entry (90p!) and once you were in you could get drinks from the same price (90p for a shot of vodka plus 40p for a mixer is a pretty great deal as far as I’m concerned). With plenty of glow sticks being handed out to the crowd for free, the dance floor was filled with an ethereal light. The cheap drinks and general awesomeness of the already too often mentioned glow sticks was always going to ensure a great night was had by all.

The highlights included a giant glow stick skipping rope, a glow stick limbo, and generally fantastic photo opportunities all night. Then when we got home, we used the 20 glow sticks we’d procured to decorate my shelves and notice board so I could fall asleep to a gentle luminescence. To be honest if you weren’t there you really missed out, so let’s hope they have another one.
