Special Socials at Cartmel College

When you look at our Social Calendar you’ll see we have four ‘Special’ events running through the year, these being…Freshers Week, Christmas Ball, Fashion Show and Extrav. These events are massive and each college has their own. They take alot of the planning, but are alot of fun!

Let us explain what each are about….

Friday Fury is a recent inter-college initiative developed by the JCR Exec Social Secretaries and LUSU to encourage the Save the College Bars campaign which aims to return the College bars to profitability.

Occurring on Friday Week 1, 4 and 9 in Lent term with students collecting a variety of themed badges, cards and wristbands from each college bar which individually got the holder £1 off entry at the socials final destination The Sugarhouse. Friday Fury has been widely credited as being a huge success and we look forward to seeing what new inter-college initiatives 2008/09 will bring!

It is in this week that we welcome a massive influx of Freshers into the land of Cartmel, while at the same time- re-welcoming continuers ‘back home’. This week is mad…and although life is alittle more settled for continuers…. for freshers- it is often a dash between attending ‘highly exciting’ introductory sessions…right through to finding an outfit in preparation for the evening’s ‘BIG NIGHT OUT’.

We always have a good mixture of planned socials to enable everyone to get to know each other. A dedicated section of this website will be made available for Freshers week during July/August 2007!

For the lads, this is usually the time when you rummage through your wardrobe, dig out your interview suit from when you were 16…and suddenly realise after trying it on again…. that you can’t get away with wearing it for the ball because it no longer fits!

The Christmas ball is a great experience and is an opportunity to see through the end of the first term in style! We typically have food, drink…and plenty of entertainment ongoing throughout the night. We also give out some awards!

Information regarding the Christmas ball is typically available between weeks 5 and 7, of winter term.

Every March, Cartmel hosts a ‘Charity Fashion Show’- as its’ contribution towards ‘One World Week’.

The fashion show is always a lot of fun for both those involved and watching. Not only is the food court totally transformed with staging, lighting and stalls, but we also have support from a number of high street retailers who hire out their latest clothes for modeling.

Information about the Charity Fashion Show is typically available in ‘The Griffin’ and this website from mid February.

The last week of the summer term is an action packed week. Exams are over and all the colleges put on a huge summer party, known as ‘Extrav’. Cartmel also put on Alex Park Festival which happens in the daytime. It’s basically a funfair but on your doorstep and proves to be a great day out!
