Men’s Darts

by Thomas Skarbek-Wazynski

The Cartmel Mens Darts team comprises of normally around Twelve players. We play on the Monday of each week from week two to week 20, likewise with matches normally starting around 7 pm and last till around 10pm.  We Play twice against the other eight colleges in the league and each week a night consists of 9 individual games.  These start form 501 best of 3 legs (its sounds complicated but that’s because we am completely useless at explain things) .

Darts itself is easy to get into and we would strongly encourage people to give it ago, there are no tryouts as such and everyone will get a game at some point in the season, we just aim to have a good time and to play within the spirit of the game. For those who play darts on a Monday night there would also be a chance to play for Cartmel Dominoes team, who proudly boast Cartmels last (and only) trophy from the George Wyatt league.

There is no training as such for darts as people normally go and play in their own time, we realise people have busy schedules and may not always be able to commit to training sessions, all we ask is that you are free Monday evenings.  If you are interested You should come down on fresher’s week to the Cartmel JCR, where one of the darts team will probably be on the oche (Darts board in case you’re wondering) or come see us during Cartmels big night in.

Last season Cartmel finished fifth in the league, a drop from third the year before. We hope to correct this and be in the mix for the league again this year. We are NOT overly competitive but to be honest we don’t like losing that much (who does), we just take it one game at a time and see where we end up at the end of the season.

 Lifting the Ertz Cup

At Cartmel we also hold little miniature tournaments in season, be it a singles knockout tournament called the Cartmel darts open, or the Doubles trophy which is normally played for on week 21 of each year. These are tournaments where anyone can enter, and are simply for fun, both woman’s and men’s team play and so do others from Cartmel who think there up for the challenge.  At the end of the season we also have a “legends night” where people from Cartmels past comeback for one more go at the big time, and compete for the Ertz trophy which has been played for since 2009. Last year we beat the has-beens as you can see by the picture below.

The last thing we will say is that NO TALENT IS REQUIRED!!! You don’t have to be Phil Taylor, or have any darts experience what so ever, it’s just a fun activity to do and something that will help you meet many new people whilst also having a great time (Hopefully).
