Carter Shield
This last term has seen the Carter shield move outside to take advantage of the supposed fine weather. We’ve had a lot of fun in the sun competing with the other colleges, probably getting too much for our own good!
Touch Rugby
The first event of the term was touch rugby. As per usual legions of loyal Cartmelians turned out to face the mighty forces of the other colleges. In our group we played Furness, Bowland and Grizedale, drawing the first and losing the second two respectively. Although it doesn’t sound very impressive the odds we were facing were almost impossible, especially when you’re facing an under-21 England International Rugby player (Bowland)! Special mention goes to Little Emma and Nick Padley for scoring some spectacular tries.

Ultimate Frisbee
The next titanic tournament was Ultimate Frisbee, which has to be one of the most entertaining games I have ever played. Our group draw was against Furness, Fylde and Lonsdale. We absolutely thrashed Furness but alas Fylde and Lonsdale’s teams were superior due to a number of University players. Not to toot my own horn but I did completely humiliate one of the Univer-sity Ultimate Frisbee team by passing the Frisbee between his legs to another team mate. Special thanks to Phil Miles for being a damn good captain.
Rounders
The final event of the summer was Rounders which was absolutely brilliant. We were drawn in the same group as Bowland, Fylde and Lonsdale and with our first game quickly lost against Fylde it looked like the afternoon was going to go the same way as the last two events. However, in the next game we completely annihilated Bowland! Phil Miles and Nick Padley up made a brilliant first base/backstop combinations, while Stephen Ashby fielded out deep very effectively. David Wood-cock was unstoppably when it came to batting, hitting rounder after rounder. We went onto destroy Lonsdale making it to the semi-finals to play Grizedale, whom we also thrashed. A mention to Robbie Pickles who hit more rounders in a single afternoon than in his entire life up to that point. Surprise, surprise though, we were up against Fylde in the final but despite a monumental battle we lost- damn close though!
A massive thanks to everyone who played in the Carter Shield this term. Cartmel is not known as a sporting college, but I have a firm belief we can destroy the opposition when we want to. So next year join the fight back!
Inter-block Rounders
This turned out to be a massive success after we spent the entire day worring about whether it was going to chuck it down. Thankfully the weather forecast was very wrong and we had brilliant sunshine. Five teams came down, which was more than 70 people! After an afternoon of serious battling between the teams and some questionable umpire decisions (sorry!) we had our winner: ‘We are better than Kat’- with ‘If Carlsberg made rounders teams…’ coming second. After a knackering afternoon we all came back for pizza and drinks in the bar. A massive thanks to everyone who attended, we hope you had fun!
Next year were are intending to run a five-aside football competition with the college, with the possibility of a County/Cartmel Cup, so keep your eyes peeled. Also if you have any ideas or any competition you would like to see us run, just get in contact.
